I have added a small sample project called ph_space_start_sample that was created in 2011.3. In this sample, when the <ph> contains a conref, the whitespace at the beginning of the <ph> is stripped out. The conref is also wrapped in another <ph>, so the second <ph> is nested within the first. I don't know if that is part of the issue.
