Expand Search Capability on WebWorks Help Search Folder Tab
Summary
Add: count of topics found, ability to search titles only, highlight synonyms in search results, and search for stopwords when included in exact-text search
Detailed Description
Our customers are requesting the following changes to the Search folder tab of WebWorks Help.
-- Add count of topics found. With CHM Help files, this count helps users gauge if their search terms are too broad.
-- Add checkbox to search titles only.
-- Highlight synonyms found in search results: include synonyms defined in synonyms.xml. Example: We define "vendor" and "supplier" as synonyms. User searches for "vendor". The system finds but does not highlight instances of "supplier". End users don't understand why there are no highlights when they view a topic containing only the synonyms.
-- Search for stopwords when search text is in quotation marks. Currently, the system highlights stopwords that happen to be in the search result topics, but the system isn't "searching" for them. Use case: our customers search for the phrase "created by". The system locates all topics that have "created", some of which also happen to include "created by".
NOTE: If the synonyms aren't highlighted, there's no great benefit to defining synonyms in synonyms.xml. (We had originally planned to enter plurals and variants of common terms in this file, since our customers aren't used to adding an asterisk to search terms.)
Use Cases

BenAllums | Good point about our not highlighting synonyms. I'm not quite sure how that could be retro-fitted into WWHelp, but we'll keep it in mind for future formats. |

BenAllums | Thanks for the feedback on synonym highlighting. We hadn't considered using them in that way. |

DavidFoster | I'd like to be able to add simple search tips (* wildcards accepted; use quotes to search for phrases). Can you tell me what file I need to modify to accomplish this? Thanks! |

BenAllums | David, You can modify the search message by creating a customization (via overrides) for the file: Formats\WebWorks Help 5.0\Files\wwhelp\messages.xml Search for "SearchQueryLabel". |
