Foreign Language Support in ePublisher v9.3

If you are working with a double-byte language in your ePublisher output, then you must use a machine for which the operating system is configured to use the same language. Otherwise (as is the case if you generate Japanese output on an English machine), you will have garbled TOC and unintelligible content. If you create a Japanese project in ePublisher on a Japanese O/S, the output’s locale is determined at run time from the user’s Operating System locale and encoding settings. This is the case for all the output formats except Microsoft HTML Help 1.x. Specifically for this format, you do need to set the project’s Encoding and Locale to the appropriate Japanese equivalents to get your TOC to work as desired.

These are some of the common locales and encodings for your reference:

ePublisher comes packaged with several non-US locales, making it possible to localize tabs, buttons, and labels for a particular region. If your desired locale is not available in the Format Settings field, you can create one manually by performing an override of a file called locales.xml. You can also change the default value of any localized text through the same process. By default, locales.xml is located in the ePublisher installation directory, here: C:\Program Files\WebWorks\ePublisher Pro\Formats\Shared\common\locale

See this TechNote article for details on performing a project override: http://www.webworks.com/Technical_Assistance/Tech_Notes/Common/EX_ePub_Project_Format_Overrides.shtml

Once you have copied the file into the appropriate location in your project folder, open it in any basic text editor (e.g., NotePad). To change an existing entry, simply locate the locale and make the desired changes. Then, save the file and regenerate output.

Once you are done with the override, open locales.xml and add a new entry in the form of the existing ones. It may be helpful to copy one of the current locales as a starting point. Replace the existing values as appropriate for your new locale; for example: <Locale name="tr" culture="tr" lcid="0x001F" codepage="1254">

Continue until you close the locale tag: </Locale>.

When the new locale is complete, save locales.xml. Close and reopen your ePublisher project, and then open Format Settings and select the appropriate encoding (e.g., Windows-1254). You can type the name of your new locale (e.g., ‘tr’) to use the new locale that you have created. [Note: Optionally, you can override locales.fti in the same directory as to add your custom locale(s) to the drop-down selection in Format Settings.]
