Use Adobe Distiller to Print PDFs
For ePublisher 9.3, there is a an upgrade for the built-in PDF generation. In addition, there was a significant upgrade for handling and resolving links across different documents and groups. Because of all of the changes, the process for enabling Acrobat Distiller generation of your PDFs was modified significantly as well. This override is only available to users who have installed Adobe Acrobat Distiller. This application is usually installed concurrently with Adobe FrameMaker and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Installation
Support for Acrobat Distiller is enabled via project overrides. For reference, the process of overriding a file in an ePublisher format is described in our TechNotes here under Performing Overrides
Easy
If you have no overrides defined for your project, i.e. no Formats folder defined, simple unzip Formats.zip in your project folder.
Download Formats.zip.
Copy Formats.zip to your ePublisher project folder and expand.
- Your project should now contain the following hierarchy:
<Project Folder> Formats Shared pdf
- Configure your Format Settings in the ePublisher interface (may need to close and reopen your project to see new settings).
Complicated
Download Formats.zip.
Expand Formats.zip.
- Create an override folder:
<Project Folder> Formats Shared pdf
Copy the following files into the pdf folder:
document.fti document.xsl generate.xsl group_document.xsl
- Configure your Format Settings in the ePublisher interface (may need to close and reopen your project to see new settings).
Usage
Configuration is accomplished through the ePublisher Format Settings dialog. There are two options present:
pdf-acrobat-distiller-extensions
This option should be set to a space delimited list of source document extensions. Users can use a mix of GhostScript and Acrobat Distiller for PDF generation.
- The default value is empty.
The recommended value is .fm .doc.
pdf-acrobat-distiller-job-settings
This options should be set to a valid Acrobat Distiller setting. As these can change per machine, you will need to manually enter in a correct setting. If an incorrect setting is found here, PDF generation with Acrobat Distiller will fail and GhostScript will be used (this is noted in the log file).
The default value is Standard.
