Question marks or other unexpected symbols in numbered/bulleted items

(article applies to version 9.3)

You may see question marks or other strange characters in the number/bullet text of some of your lists in the output. If you see this effect, or if some autonumber text (chapter/section numbers, etc.) appears in a Greek/Symbol font, then you may be affected by a known bug in the ePublisher FrameMaker adapter.

The problem seems to be caused when you have multiple numbered paragraph styles (bulleted lists, numbered lists, etc.) that use different autonumber property configurations. The most common culprit is a bulleted list that uses a character style that you have named Symbol (it may use a Wingdings or other non-unicode font). Later in the document, if there is a numbered list/paragraph that uses the Default Paragraph Font for the autonumbers, that second list (and possibly others after it) will have the unwanted characters. For some as-yet-unknown reason, the encoding switch that is made for the Symbol bullets is not reset for the next numbered list in the document. Since no character style is explicitly referenced for the step paragraph styles, the numbers inherit the wrong font/encoding. Since the \t tab character is not found in the new (incorrect) character map, a question mark is passed to the output. Until we are able to build a fix into the product, there are two workarounds:

1. Change the name of the character style Symbol to something else (e.g., "SymbolChar").

2. Create a new character style to stand in for the "Default Paragraph Font" setting. For example, create a new character format called "Normal", and set all of the properties to "As Is". Then, set that new style as the autonumber character style for all of your step paragraphs that use the Default Paragraph Font in the autonumber properties.
