Issues with Dingbat Fonts and How to Use Graphical Bullets

It is possible that some of your bullets might defined as Symbols or Dingbats which uses ZapfDingbat font. In an effort to make ePublisher Pro output compatible in a wide range of environments, we no longer support the Symbol and ZapfDingbats fonts. This is because they use a character set different than other fonts, which all correspond to the Unicode set. Therefore, many systems and browsers will not properly display these characters (which is why you see a "n" in your HTML output, for example). There are two solutions to this dilemma: use a character from a supported font or use images as bullets. To use a character from supported font family:

  1. Open the Windows Character Map (Start>>Programs>>Accessories>>System Files>>Character Map).

  2. Click the "Character Set" drop-down menu and select 'Unicode.'
  3. If you have a particular font family in mind, choose it from the "Font" menu. Otherwise, choose a common font, such as Times New Roman, Courier New, or Arial. Keep in mind that not all fonts support all available characters.
  4. From the character chart, choose a character to be used as your bullet. Click "Select" and then "Copy" to copy the character to the clipboard.
  5. In ePublisher Pro, open the Style Designer (View>>Style Designer).

  6. Choose the Paragraph Styles tab.
  7. Select the paragraph style associated with the affected bulleted lists (e.g., Bulleted).
  8. On the Properties tab, choose "Bullet."
  9. In the Bullet Info section, click the text box for the "Text" property.
  10. Hit Ctrl+v to paste your desired bullet character into the box.
  11. From the "Character Style" menu, select either your desired style (that does not use the Symbol or Dingbats fonts) or the default font.
  12. Regenerate your output for the changes to take effect.

To use an image as your bullet:

  1. Create the image file to be used as your bullet using an image editing application, such as MS Paint.
  2. Save the image file into your project's Files folder (View>>User Files).

  3. In ePublisher Pro, open the Style Designer (View>>Style Designer).

  4. Choose the Paragraph Styles tab.
  5. Select the paragraph style associated with the affected bulleted lists (e.g., Bulleted).
  6. On the Properties tab, choose "Bullet."
  7. From the "Image" drop-down menu, choose the appropriate graphic.
  8. Regenerate your output for the changes to take effect.
